Nature Valleys Trails and Bushfires
The Historic Nightcap Track (HNT) is a significant track traversing the Nightcap Range in northeastern NSW, situated in the Whian Whian State Conservation Area & Nightcap National Park. Unfortunately, the track was affected by the October-November 2019 Mt Nardi bushfire. As a result, Richmond Landcare Inc. will work in collaboration with the NSW NPWS to restore the 5km of damaged HNT and undertake habitat restoration activities across 5 hectares of fire-impacted Gondwanan rainforest and adjacent communities.
The HNT has a rich history of use by the Bundjalung peoples, making it a culturally, ecologically, and historically significant asset for the community. The Mt Nardi Fire significantly impacted the track and surrounding forests, resulting in the closure of the HNT. This project will involve the community in the restoration of this beloved public asset while educating them about rainforest and fire management.
The project will include repairing the damage caused by the fire, such as clearing fire debris from the track and overhead, remodelling steps and track drainage, and replacing NPWS signage. Furthermore, weed control will support environmental rehabilitation adjacent to the track. The community will be involved in hands-on working bees, educational events, and a public bush walk event to celebrate the reopening of the trail.
