Earlier this week Richmond Landcare’s Nature-based Solutions project (RLI NBS) facilitated an interactive tour of an area in the upper catchment of the Wilsons River, led by rainforest botanist and long-term bush regenerator Nan Nicholson. Staff from the RLI NBS project alongside members of the project’s Community Advisory Group and researchers from Southern Cross University made visits to a number of riparian sites along Terania Creek and Rocky Creek.
The purpose of the day was to evaluate successes and learn from past failures at a series of riparian rehabilitation plantings, some of which were planted over 40 years ago! The array of plantings provide incredible insight into planting design, species selection, localised creek geomorphology and the features of fledgling or established restoration areas that are able to withstand high flow rates during flood events. The comprehensive knowledge and understanding from Nan, in addition to a number of scientists and local Landcare members, will help to inform the ongoing planting methodology for the RLI NBS project.
As the project progresses further, we will continue to hold tours to gain further knowledge and wisdom from the Landcare community to ensure the long-term success of the RLI NBS project.
